So my sister was here this weekend, and that was fun. I don't know, it's hard to tell with her, cause she's fifteen and miserable, but I think she had fun. It was good to get to hang out with her a bit anyway.

We went to see The Grudge last night, and it totally reinforced my whole dislike of "scary" movies. Giant plot holes aside, movies like The Grudge and The Ring rely on jumpy moments and scary music to keep you interested. It's forced suspense and it pisses me off. And The Grudge was so much like The Ring, too. With the creepy kids and the whole thing with the security camera. But it's like, slap some CGI creepy things crawling around unnaturally together with some eerie music that rises and falls at the right moments, and add in a cute blonde or brunette and you're supposed to be scared. I suppose it's a step up from the slasher flicks redux of the late 90s, because at least some of the images in these movies are creepy enough to make me look twice at the shadows on the drive home, but after awhile all these movies run together, too.

I think mostly, I hate feeling manipulated when I see a movie. If a movie is truly scary or sad or funny or dramatic, I don't need cues, musical or otherwise, to tell me how I'm supposed to be feeling in a certain moment. You know what movie I've always found to be truly terrifying? The Shining. Know why? Cause it's scary without being completely in your face about it. It's the creepy images, the slow descent into madness, the complete isolation, the lack of background music--the silence. It's a freaky movie. I rarely make it to the end anymore, cause the end isn't the part that creeps me out (usually, I'm rooting for Jack to kill that obnoxious woman cause I HATE HER SO MUCH!!!!). So yeah. The moral is, today's horror movies=bad.

Anyway, Christina posted pictures from us at the RennFest that are actually cute! Cause we are cute people. So go! Look! Marvel at Teh Cuteness! I'm just happy that you can't see the ginormous hole in my chucks in either of the pictures of me stradling a giant snake. Yes.

Speaking of, I need to buy some new shoes. I'm broke, though. I should start a "Buy Heather New Shoes" fund. I bet I could make lots of money. There could be a telethon and everything. I could get some people down in the TV station to be the hosts, and I could have people call in and donate, since it's for such a good cause. I would need some acts, though, so people wouldn't get bored and change the channel. Anyone want to be on my telethon? You could sing, or dance, or stare at the camera. I don't care!

Actually, I think I may have guilted my parents into sending me some money, since I spent so much on my sister this weekend, and spent almost my entire paycheck last week on my car. So maybe we'll hold off on the telethon.

i'm all for a telethon, but only if you donate a portion to me too. that'll be the first topic at the next meeting, hehe.

everyone has told me the Grudge isn't worth seeing, but i'll probably go see it for myself anyway. when i first saw the previews, i totally thought it was for Ring 2. maybe girl ghosts with long black hair is in right now?

it's weird you speak of the Shining, b/c i totally saw that "newer" version on TV today, not the old one with Jack (which is 20 times better anyway), but the version that came out like 10 years ago i think. I would tell you to watch that one, b/c it's totally not scary at all, and that way you can make it to the end...but the ending is kind of different and really cheesy, so don't even bother.

It was totally like The Ring, and lot because the whole premise was based on creepy kids and long haired ghosts. :P

I think I saw the newer version of The Shining, didn't it have that guy from Wings in it? Some of it was better in that it made more textual sense, but mostly it was lame. I like that the original Shining is scary, I just usually don't make it to the end anymore cause it's so long and I don't care about the part where he finally starts chasing his family down, cause I think his wife totally deserves to bite it. She's annoying. :P

damnit, i'm not a big fan of creepy kid movies, but i'll probably see it anyway

yeah, it has the guy from Wings in it. that just makes it all less scary, hehe.

See, I liked The Ring. The Grudge? Not so much. It actually reminded me more of the original Japanese Ringu more than it did of the American remake. Maybe it's a Japanese thing to just... not explain things AT ALL TO ANY SATISFACTION?

I dunno.

But I also *hated* The Shining. Because I'd just finished reading the book (which is one of the scariest things EVER) and I was just so annoyed at all the things they'd changed. like, why the hell is the little boy talking with his finger? Where are the hedge monsters? That was, like, the scariest part of the book!

In general, though, books scare me more than movies do.

I wasn't in to The Ring so much, mostly because there were SO MANY PLOT HOLES that I couldn't get into the actual scary parts. Also, for some reason, the girl coming out of the TV didn't scare me as much as it scared everyone else I know. :P

I didn't read The Shining until after I'd seen the movie, so all the stuff that was missing didn't bother me as much, I guess. Usually if I read a book and then watch the movie, I always end up hating the movie, but if I do it the other way around I'm usually okay with both the book and the movie. Usually.

Although, I do remember in the book I didn't hate the wife and want her to die a horrible and painful death, so that was a plus.

You look a bit like Anne Hathaway in those pictures... bitch. But you're so cute. And that friend of yours who posted is damn pretty. CURSE ALL YOU PRETTY PEOPLE! ;)

And I'm also angry that the Ren Faire here is so much crappier than those everywhere else in the world. Because I totally dig them but it's lame here. All it is now is local artists selling their utter crap, only half of which has to do with the Renaissance, and since I live in the desert there is no greenery or trees to get excited about. *sigh* I need to move somewhere that has cool Ren fests. And cute people who look like Anne Hathaway ;)

Also, I read your report of The Grudge, even though I only saw the first hour or so. And I still want to see the end, but I agree-- it just wasn't that scary. Oh how I long for a truly good, scary movie. Whatever happened to people striving to reach Hitchcock status? I loved that man.

also, the miniseries version of the shining was better, because it didn't have those damn twins (who were what, the director's neices?) and it was closer to the book and it didn't have Jack Nicholson, whom I hate.
yesss. random comments abound!

lots of comments in one!!

Hee. Thank you! :)

I like the atmosphere of the RenFest a whole lot, but the thing where you have to pay to get in and then pay to do most of the cool stuff inside bugs me. Mostly, I go for the food. And the MD RenFest is in a really pretty wooded area back in the middle of nowhere. So the scenery is at least nice. I can't imagine a RenFest in the desert, how does that work?

I would love to see a really truly actually scary movie. There's a Hitchcock festival at the arts center this month, but I've missed most of the movies, which makes me mad. Those were less scary than suspenseful, but he knew how to do suspense in ways that weren't just ...oooooh, scary music.

I saw the miniseries of The Shining, and I thought it followed the book a little better and made more sense, but it wasn't as scary to me. I think mostly cause it had the guy from Wings, and he doesn't scare me in any way other than through his not so hot acting skills.

I don't hate Jack Nicholson, but sometimes I wonder if he is in fact evil. I haven't actually seen very many of his movies, though, either.

well, they do it in a tree-filled park in the middle of town, but still. Not so many trees, and you can see the street. Honestly, it doesn't work :-/

The things that really scare me are all psychological, which is why I like Hitchcock movies. And I like stuff that really makes you scared to be in your own head, because you just don't know... movies today just rely on the creep and gore factor, which is lame.

Jack Nicholson=totally evil.

When I was a kid, there was this Bookmobile that would drive around our neighborhood about once a week or so, it was this big RV full of books from the public library. Once I got this book of jokes told by Fozzie, and then we moved and I never turned it in. To this day, whenever I run across that book in a box or something, I feel guilty and I hide it real quick in case the librarians are after me or something.

Agreed. I couldn't get past the huge plot holes long enough to be scared of anything. Plus, I thought the ending was so very cheesey.

I think I like 23 the best so far, but I haven't listened to it enough times yet to be sure. :)

Yay, I love Ren Faires! That one looks pretty. Joy!

I don't think I have any desire to see The Grudge, it looks... meh. I do have to say that 'Saw' has piqued my interest though. But I am picky when it comes to scary movies.

The MD RenFaire is really pretty, one thing it definitely had going for it. Beautiful scenery. :)

I'm really picky when it comes to movies in general. There are maybe two or three movies out of all the movies in the last few years I've seen in theaters that I really really liked. :P
