I wasn't in to The Ring so much, mostly because there were SO MANY PLOT HOLES that I couldn't get into the actual scary parts. Also, for some reason, the girl coming out of the TV didn't scare me as much as it scared everyone else I know. :P
I didn't read The Shining until after I'd seen the movie, so all the stuff that was missing didn't bother me as much, I guess. Usually if I read a book and then watch the movie, I always end up hating the movie, but if I do it the other way around I'm usually okay with both the book and the movie. Usually.
Although, I do remember in the book I didn't hate the wife and want her to die a horrible and painful death, so that was a plus.
