I want to write about human relationships. In any book I read, any show or movie I watch, the thing that interests me the most, the thing that will always get me hooked, is a character's interaction with the people around him or her. And that's not necessarily a strange thing to say, I'm sure a lot of people feel that way.

But when I read The Blind Assassin, I believe that Iris and Alex are in love, and I feel the loss that they feel. When I watch Buffy or Firefly, I believe that Xander and Buffy love each other in that way that only best friends can, that Giles sees Buffy as he would see his own daughter, that Captain Mal is fiercely loyal to the few he lets into his life. When I watch a movie, if the relationships presented are not convincing, I generally won't like it much. The reason I actually like Gangs of New York is because of the way Bill the Butcher interacts with those around him.

I want to write like that. I want to write relationships that mean something to the reader. I want to show the complexity of human interaction. I know it's been done a thousand times before, and I'm not exactly sure I have something new to say about it, I just want to be able to do it in a way that satisfies me.

I think that's probably a curse for any writer.

As writers we are always going to be our own worst critics, because only WE know the message we're really tryingto convey and we can never feel satisfied that we conveyed that message properly.

But I agree about the human relationships thing. I never really noticed that about me until recently, if in a movie or show or even a book the charactors' relations to one another isn't convincing enough I tend not to like it, but for me my main concern is charactor development. In my writings there are no one dimentional charactors they all evelop either alone or through relationships with others. Thus my writings become complicated and I lose interest or get frustrated.

*raises martini glass* here's to irritable writers!

Here here. I get so frustrated with everything I write these days. I have something due for creative writing that I've barely started, and it's already late. It makes me all grumbly.

you know this kind of feeds into what i was discussing tonight with a friend. we were watching "lost in translation" and remarked how the scene when the bill murray character met the girl, the dialogue seemed so real. it was exactly as awkward and fumbly as it would have been if that had been two real people. it was great.

but anyway... i guess i don't know what that has to do with anything :) but i *definitely* know what you mean about writing, i hate almost everything i write. it's awful.

I've been hearing such good things about Lost in Translation. Is it available to rent yet? Cause I'd really like to see it.
