Why would anyone even bother to write something like this?

It's a sociological study. People write those.
The thing is, it's so easy to twist reasons out of it. They go with the idea that couples prefer boys...why not blame genetics and say that the men who are more likely to produce girls are somehow genetically less likely to be content with any given relationship?
I might have missed it, but does this thing say anything about families with both boys and girls? Like, one of each? If it's going to even pretend to be thorough, it needs to look into that sort of case, and compare the ones where a boy came first with those where a girl came first.
Also, much as it's not as bad as it was a few centuries (decades...years...whatever), this is still a patriarchal society, so it shouldn't really come as a shock that a lot of people would rather have a boy. Power structures are still based around dominant males, which is (I'm sure) a contributing factor.

......I put way too much thought into that, considering how much I need sleep. Beh.

Anyway, I know it's stupid, that's why it irritated me so much. And then I was mad cause I actually read it, knowing how stupid it was. And then I was mad cause I'm a girl and it sucks.

I found you through buffy_icons. (You intrigued me that you're studying Russian History.) I skimmed that article, but stopped pretty early in. It's a load of crap. I have two brothers. One has been married for 15 or so years and has two girls. The other is on his third wife and has three little boys (2 from the first, one from the second.) Yeah, so it's crap.

I completely agree. It's not based on any real facts, other than what those two guys say. There's no real study, and like my friend pointed out earlier, they neglect to mention families with both boys and girls. I was just having a really bad day yesterday, and the fact that something as stupid as that was posted online right by my email where I would have to look at it really bothered me. :P
