I gave great advice, too. I said, "My uncle Alex Vonnegut, a Harvard educated life insurance salesman who lived at 5033 Pennsylvania Street, taught me something very important. He said when things were really going well we should be sure to notice it.

"He was talking about simple occasions, not great victories: maybe drinking lemonade on a hot afternoon in the shade, or smelling the aroma of a nearby bakery, or fishing and not caring if we catch anything or not, or hearing somebody all alone playing a piano really well in the house next door.

"Uncle Alex urged me to say this out loud during such epiphanies: 'If this isn't nice, what is?'"

If you really want to hurt your parents, and you don't have the nerve to be gay, the least you can do is go into the arts. I'm not kidding. The arts are not a way to make a living. They are a very human way of making life more bearable. Practicing art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, for heaven's sake. Sing in the shower. Dance to the radio. Tell stories. Write a poem to a friend, even a lousy poem. Do it as well as you possibly can. You will get an enormous reward. You will have created something.

-- A Man Without a Country

It's strange to live in a world where Kurt Vonnegut doesn't. So it goes.

When I saw it on the front page of Yahoo (my homepage) this morning...all I thought was "Heather is going to be sad."

I heard all about it - I'm at work and I'm seriously about to burst into tears!

Oh, I definitely burst into tears as soon as I found out, but luckily for me I was safe in my bedroom. :p

Slaughter-House Five is seriously one of the greatest books ever. I really should read more by him. So it goes, indeed. Your tag for this entry is priceless.

He has tons of great quotes, although your selections are quite good. I'm spending a good deal of time looking at his wikiquote page today. Wonderful stuff.

It's definitely one of my all-time favorites, that's for sure. I'm really far more upset about this than I thought I would be.

Man, I could waste some serious time on that wikiquote page. It makes me feel a little lazy, though, there are still so many novels of his I haven't read. :p

So, hi. Moved over here from "lj user="hate_ball"> and ranting about Sorkin and saw that we basically love all the same shows (with shockingly few exceptions), so...friending.

Oh, and I also love "Titanic" unironically. But really only because Victor Garber is in it. "I'm sorry I couldn't build you a stronger ship, young Rose." Come on!

Anyway, I'm gonna poke around a bit if that's alright. My journal's flocked, but...poke around where you can, if you want? I don't even know.

Hi! I friended you back on the grounds of your Titanic love alone. ;)

Poke around all you'd like! I'm kind of a little shocked that this is the last public entry I made. Maybe I should make a friends-only entry or something, I almost never post publicly these days. :p

Anyway, hi! I read your R/Hr movie!fic and loved it! I am drowning in Potter-love these days.
