May. 28th, 2004 11:50 amI'm not really interested in having children. The idea of being responsible for another human life terrifies me beyond belief. It's more than just the responsibility thing, though, being a parent means you are responsible for everything that does and does not happen to your child. You shape their personality, their eating habits, their interests. I don't know if I want to handle that kind of pressure.
But even more than that, I don't think I can handle worrying about things like this. How are you supposed to protect your children in a place where that kind of thing can happen completely arbitrarily? How is that woman supposed to continue living? Just thinking of what happened to those children makes me want to throw up. I stopped reading the news a few years ago because I couldn't deal with stories like this one. You have to desensitize yourself completely to be able to stomach the news anymore, but how can you do that when something so atrocious can happen to three little kids?

Date: 2004-05-28 09:23 am (UTC)As I think about this and the shaping of the youth through interaction, television and the news - I can not imagine the world our kids [yes I do want kids - and at one point you said I was having yours ;)] will be a citizen in. I too gave up watching the news and mostly read it now, though I see a little on the TV once in a while. I'm going over this in my head and all I can think of is our political/war front and its shaping of the youth. What kind of world are our kids going to be in, when we use the death of individuals as entertainment? When we are more focused on political and power agendas, then the lives of thousands or even millions of individuals? What kind of world will it be if every day you listen/read/watch the news to find out what color (terrorist warning color) the day is? I know all of this would have a major impact on me, especially at an incredibly young and impressionable age.
I can only hope that things brighten. That somehow things will be better for the world.
This reply kind of jumped ship but you know how my mind is and its random links and thoughts.
There is a book you may be interested in (semi-on this subject) called "This is the way the world ends" by James Morrow. I read it for my American Studies class, which was a critique of American Society. It is about society, war and how we bring our own destruction upon us and control it. It is a very interesting book.

Date: 2004-05-28 02:37 pm (UTC)the worst part was when the broadcaster reported "the mother discovered the bodies when she returned home from work yesterday."
i can't even imagine. i think my head would explode right there if i found a loved one like that. i'm never a violent person nor do i own a firearm, but if that ever happened to my child/lover/family member, i'd be one of those people you've heard about that smuggles a handgun into the courtroom when the suspect is on trial and makes sure justice is done from my own hands.
