we'll fill our mouths with cinnamon now
Oct. 31st, 2006 01:31 pmI saw the Decemberists Sunday night.
Set list:
Crane Wife 3
The Island
We Both Go Down Together
Engine Driver
Yankee Bayonet
Perfect Crime #2
Shankhill Butchers
Song for Myla Goldberg
O Valencia!
July, July
16 Military Wives
Crane Wife 1 & 2
Sons and Daughters
Encore:
Culling of the Fold
The Legionnaire's Lament
A Cautionary Tale
There's nothing like seeing a band play live when you know they're having as much fun performing as you are watching. They told lame jokes, and made fun of audience members who were shouting out requests (which I always hate, so yay for that). Colin was happy that the audience was singing along, but was worried that our voices weren't warmed up, so before O Valencia! he conducted a few scales -- "This is a wonderful show." We also all got to sing the la de da de dahs on 16 Military Wives, which was fun. He would pose for people taking pictures where their camera phones, and at one point during Perfect Crime #2 stole someone's digital camera and took a million shots of himself and the band playing. I think the best may have been at the end, during A Cautionary Tale, when half the band took their instruments and made their way through the crowd to the center of the club to do some handstands.
No, I lied. The best part of the show was Crane Wife 1 & 2 and then leading straight into Sons and Daughters. I listened to Sons and Daughters again today on the way into work for the first time since Sunday night, and I almost cried tears of happy-concertness.
I will say, though, that the opener sucked so so so much. I keep wanting to call them Lavender Brown, but they were Lavender Diamond. I think they're only opening through the end of the week, so if you're seeing the Decemberists after this Friday, count your blessings. The lead singer definitely thought she was way more adorable than she was, and kept telling these long involved boring stories, and then would sing horribly off-key. Not fun. Although, at one point in the middle of one of her stupid stories she paused, and Aster screamed "You're not cute!" at her, which was totally hilarious. Well, I guess it would have been more so if the girl hadn't heard and asked what Aster said. Then I kinda felt bad for laughing at her. But, seriously. She sucked.
Anyway. Yay for the Decemberists! They played The Engine Driver! I want to go again!

I went to grab lunch at the courthouse today, and there was a grown woman in a cheerleading costume. My first though was "She's too old to be in high school." My second thought was "What's a professional cheerleader doing in the county courthouse?" And finally my third thought was "Oh. Right. Halloween."
So, happy Halloween! Sadly, I have to work tonight. I wonder if I can rustle up some devil horns or something to wear with my uniform.
Also, I'm very much behind on all things TV-related at the moment. I'm thinking tomorrow night will be catch-up, and then maybe I'll post something. I watched the opening scene of tonight's VM, and I have a feeling I'm actually going to have some things to say. I'm a little disappointed in people's reactions to this week's Torchwood, though. I had such high hopes for that show. I don't know if I'll like it, but I'm pretty sure I won't stop watching so long as there's John Barrowman to be had on my computer screen.
Oh, and I'm trying to find a good concert to go to between December 17ish and December 29ish. Megan's coming back from Africa for two weeks and her only request for me is to find a concert to go to. If anybody in the DC area hears about anything good, mind letting me know? I'm looking at a few websites, and most places don't have much announced for that far in advance yet.

Date: 2006-10-31 07:16 pm (UTC)The Engine Driver was really good, especially because I wasn't expecting it. :) Except there was this guy dressed up as a soldier standing next to me during that song, and he had this checkered flag and giant red feather plume hat, and he kept moving around and bumping into me and it was very distracting. But other than that, really really good. :)

Date: 2006-10-31 10:04 pm (UTC)Oh, Heather. I love how your brain works :)
I was really hard on Torchwood this week, but I was in an unusually pissy mood when I watched it, so that may have contributed. Jack WAS very pretty. You should watch it just for that.

Date: 2006-11-01 04:55 am (UTC)It makes me sad. JACK IS SO PRETTY. How are they not getting that that's what I want to watch??? Although, I think Ianto got one line and it was the best part of the episode. Well, second best, because clearly Jack's Alicia Silverstone impression was the best. :p
Hiiiii!
